JUDGE ROY MOORE AND FOUNDATION FOR MORAL LAW APPLAUD LIBERAL 9TH CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS FOR UPHOLDING RECOGNITIONS OF GOD IN THE PLEDGE AND ON OUR CURRENCY
March 12, 2010
Former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore and the Foundation for Moral Law, a religious liberties legal organization in Montgomery, Alabama, welcomed the long-awaited decisions from the 9th Circuit yesterday upholding “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance and “In God We Trust” on our currency and handing another defeat to atheist activist Michael Newdow. Over three years ago, Judge Moore and the Foundation filed amicus briefs in both cases in the 9th Circuit to defend the right to acknowledge God under the First Amendment. (Read the Foundation’s briefs in Jan Roe, et al. v. Rio Linda School District (Pledge) and Newdow v. Congress (Motto).)
Judge Roy Moore commented on the 9th Circuit’s decisions:
“We are very excited that one of the most liberal circuits in the country has upheld our National Motto, ‘In God We Trust’ on our currency and the recitation of ‘under God’ in our Pledge of Allegiance. This is a positive sign that even the 9th Circuit in California recognizes the importance of acknowledging God in our Country.”
The Court reiterated the fact that acknowledging God is a historic and constitutional foundation of our Nation. The Court stated:
“The Pledge of Allegiance serves to unite our vast nation through the proud recitation of some of the ideals upon which our Republic was founded and for which we continue to strive: one Nation under God—the Founding Fathers’ belief that the people of this nation are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights. . . .”
The threat to the Pledge of Allegiance and our National Motto, “In God We Trust,” is far from over. Michael Newdow is fighting “under God” in the Pledge on the East Coast, too, with a challenge brought against two school districts in New Hampshire that is now before the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals. The Foundation for Moral Law is preparing a brief to file next month in the New Hampshire case and will continue to monitor the cases in California.
The Foundation for Moral Law will continue to be vigilant about defending our unalienable right to publicly acknowledge the Creator God.
The Foundation for Moral Law, a national non-profit legal organization, is located in Montgomery, Alabama, and is dedicated to restoring the knowledge of God in law and government through litigation and education relating to moral issues and religious liberty cases.
